About

Neglecting your mind neglects your body.

We’ve all heard someone say that an occurrence “just made me sick!” That’s not just a saying! Research studies have found numerous links between mental health and physical health.

Maybe you have tried to power through and ignore those nagging feelings or put emotional distress on hold. This strategy can work for a short period, but as you know, this will take a toll not just on your relationships, your work, and daily functioning, but will even affect your health!

Powering through is very much like putting a piece of tape over the check engine light in a car. The car may continue to run for a while, but eventually, the damage will be so severe that the engine may ultimately fail. The engine was giving warning signs that the owner ignored!

So, don’t ignore what your mind and body are trying to tell you – it’s time to get some help.

“Take care of your mind. Your body will thank you. Take care of your body. Your mind will thank you.”
– Debbie Hampton

Focus on what matters most – yourself and your relationships.

When I started Life Focus Counseling, I wanted to provide a safe place for busy, distressed people who needed to set aside time to focus on themselves or their relationship(s). In the beginning, I primarily worked with children, families, and parenting, but I currently work with adults and couples.

Some of the issues I have helped others with are:

Women dealing with anxiety, depression, healing childhood trauma, dealing with adult children or in-laws, emotional eating, spouse of a sex addict, and young adults navigating life after leaving home

Couples with problems related to communication, gaining empathy toward their spouse, having more fun as a couple, setting goals as a couple, and what it takes to have a healthy relationship

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps get to the root of problems like perfectionism, worry, social anxiety, overreacting, and past trauma(s).

Parenting helps to develop a relationship with your child(ren) that includes connection and mutual respect to help them become responsible, respectful, and resourceful adults.

Our work together focuses on your goals.

I offer online counseling to residents in Missouri using a confidential, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform.

Many people prefer online counseling for reasons such as time constraints, distance, privacy, childcare issues, convenience, or disabilities. When you think about it, how awesome to be able to have your counseling sessions in the comfort of your own home?!!!

As we have seen over the past few years, many services have migrated to online platforms. EMDR and other modalities that I employ work well in this environment.

Studies have shown online counseling as effective as office-based counseling, which encouraged me to go this route. I find online counseling to be a great fit for me and the people I serve.

I want you to be the best version of yourself! Let’s get started!

About Deborah

I have an entrepreneurial spirit!

My motto comes from Vivian Green –”Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass – It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” I refer to this motto often as life events come up – and they do come up!

My educational background is primarily in business. I enjoyed starting, owning, and operating a fitness center franchise for women (Curves) from 2000 to 2002. It was great fun watching women enjoy the community they built inside the fitness center and reach their fitness goals.

I believe the time spent at the fitness center is where I especially saw the mind/body connection, and this experience planted the seed to become a counselor.

Counseling came after Curves.

In 2006, I received a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary because I enjoy the interplay between scripture and human behavior. Besides a basic education in counseling, I received more training for assisting couples by facilitating relationship education workshops in a pregnancy care center for expecting couples and singles. Pulling from the ups and downs of 38 years of marriage and raising three children comes in handy, too!

I also have EMDR training and certification. I chose to pursue this therapy after seeing multiple clients and realizing that some clients would get better by talk therapy, applying coping mechanisms, or setting goals and having support to reach them.

But I realized that some clients I could probably see week after week for ten years, and they were probably not going to get better. Something more was needed – there was a need to get to the root of their issue(s). EMDR is a good fit for those clients!

I am non-denominational concerning religion. I enjoy working with people of all faiths, so please know that I will not push my Christian beliefs on you. How much we discuss scripture is up to you.

When I am not seeing clients…

I enjoy spending time with family, hiking or biking with my husband and dog, Milli, or playing the piano.

I am also having fun with my new hobby – making quilts! I have learned that it is important to use my creative side to avoid experiencing burnout from my serious side!
